Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote ruled Monday that the federal government and indivi dual states do not have to pay for most abortions wanted by women on welfare. The federal government must pay the Sioux Indian Nation more than $100 million for Black Hills land taken from the tribe more than a century ago. the Supreme Court ruled Monday. Only Justice William H. Rehnquit dissented. The 35.2 million Social Security checks being mailed this week will be $1.4 billion bigger, reflecting a 14.3 percent cost of living increase to beneficiaries of the program. C. 28782 Leaving For The Netherlands Bart Meroney Bart Meroney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meroney of Columbus, a recent graduate of Polk Central High School, leaves July 11th for a year in the Netherlands as an AES student. He will be living with Mr. and Mrs. Hendrick Jorissen in Wassenaar which is located very close to The Hague Bart’s Dutch father is a Marine Officer and his mother is a part-time social worker. He will have one sister. Marian Ellen, who is 13 and a brother. Mattijs, who is 16. and another brother. Alexander, who will be in the United States this year with the AFS program. The Jorissen family enjoys sailing, field hockey, and other outdoor activities. When Bart arrives in the Netherlands he and his family will be going on a two week Continued On Back Page WEDNESDAY. JULY 2. 1980 No Beer Sales On Sunday Here Monday night at the Tryon Town Council meeting the Board repealed the present Sunday ABC sales effective Monday, July 14th. This prohibits the sale of beer and wine on Sunday for all businesses except social clubs or businesses with brown bagging permits. In other action the Board approved the 1980-81 town budget of $692,693 with a tax rate of 40c per $100 valuation. July 4th Firecracker Tournament Results The July 4th Firecracker Tournament was held last weekend at Harmon Field In the Men’s Division the winner was Bobby Johnson Paint with Reid’s Truck Stop runner-up and Doc’s third. The Women's Tournament will be played July Sth and 6th. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Howell (Susan Arledge) of Spartanburg are at Scranton. Pa this month where Mr Howell is doing missionary work Mrs Howell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Beauford Arledge of Rt 2. Mill Spring and teaches at Chapman High School. Mr. Howell teaches at Polk Central. Mr. and Mrs. Adris Dover of Detroit. Michigan are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Homer Shields.
